Just Do It!

Just Do It!
The old Nike slogan certainly remains relevant. At least for three York Catholic seniors. With a desire to be teachers, and with a servant mentality, Annabella Breschi, Sarah Giesselbach, and Marley Costlow (shown left to right) are learning while giving back at the same time.
The three seniors were searching for an opportunity to explore the teaching profession. After a proposed local program didn’t materialize, the students took matters into their own hands. With the help of their guidance counselor, Sarah McShane and new principal Kathy Hand, the girls were able to secure a self-directed internship with Holy Trinity School, an elementary partner school to York Catholic.
One day a month, the three ladies spend the afternoon at Holy Trinity, working alongside professional teachers in various classrooms performing a variety of duties. “I wanted to get the experience, and I wanted to get to work with kids,” Giesselbach said. “This experience has been really helpful because it helps me understand what my future could be like. It also helps me in my college selection.”
This experience also highlights the opportunities for internships, an aspect of senior year that can help with college selection and also help students untangle career paths. “There are two important elements to this opportunity,” McShane said. “The students are getting experience in the classroom and we are giving back to one of our partner schools. The girls are really enjoying their time with the teachers in the classroom and with the students. This is giving them that motivation toward an end goal.”
